It is nothing short of heart breaking to watch the water levels rapidly decline on Georgian Bay. I see docks that are now in the middle of lawns and vast expanses of rocks and shale never before exposed in my tenure in the Georgian Triangle. Most distressing of all are the environmental impacts of this worsening situation.
Reduced water levels have a dramatic impact on the land and aquatic coastal ecosystems. Everything from wildlife habitats to increased levels of pollutants will create problems that can substantially change our quality of life in and around the Great Lakes and beyond.
Where Did The Water Go?
The most common reasons given for the decreased water levels centre around the dredging of the St Clair River several decades ago and the subsequent erosion of that river bed. Personally, I’m not convinced. It may be part of the problem but I clearly recall how quickly and dramatically water levels fell here a few years ago; almost overnight. I’m not a scientist of any kind but wonder how much consideration has been given to the idea of shifting plates in the earth’s core? Sounds crazy perhaps but plausible. no?
As more and people become aware that this does not appear to be some normal fluctuation, groups are forming across the Great Lakes that are demanding action from levels of government. So far, the International Joint Commission on the Great Lakes has done little in taking a firm stand or position with the Federal government.
Locally, another group has formed to reach out to politicians asking for further study and assistance in finding resolutions. You can visit their website at www.georgianbayforever.org for further information.
