Contact CentreOnce upon a time, there was an old school in Collingwood that was eventually sold to the Town when the school’s doors closed.  It became a fitness centre but over time, the building fell into disrepair and faced the prospect of demolition.

Heritage enthusiasts in the town felt it could be saved and along came a knight in shining armour – his name was actually, Greg Knight of all things. This is a guy with a degree in Geography, an MBA in Entrepreneurial Studies and a law degree from Osgoode Hall who happens to have a passion for heritage, community, sustainability and building. Greg’s company, Knight Developments,  specializes in unique homes that are “innovative, environmentally sustainable and cost-efficient.”

They purchased the old school on Napier Street and through a twist of near magic, they created the Duke Lofts – four extraordinary condominium homes in the downtown that blend contemporary design with heritage architecture.  They are in walking distance of downtown and three of the four homes are already sold.

As regular readers know, I can be a critic of some new construction but I’ll tell you, these residences are spectacular!  The quality of the craftsmanship really surprised and impressed me.  It’s obvious that a great deal of care went into the finishing.  The remaining unit offers 2,405 square feet over three levels starting with a ground floor entry foyer giving inside access to the single width but 2 car tandem garage and, out to a private courtyard patio. The second floor features a great room with 11 foot ceilings, hardwood floors, over-sized baseboards, a powder room and a stunning kitchen backed by an original brick wall of the old school.  I love the tall, custom windows which I’m told were Mennonite crafted.  The third floor features three bedrooms and 2 full baths plus a laundry closet. Check out the photos below.

I’m told that everyone who sees the unit loves it which I fully believe but, the stairs have been an issue. It would be feasible to add an elevator by taking space out of the courtyard and even at an estimated cost of around $30-$35,000 for that, it still seems almost worth it given that this unit is for sale at $489,900.  The condo fee is $341.00 a month and taxes are yet to be assessed.  This unit fronts on West Street.

As the developer is cooperating with REALTORS®, let me know if you are interested and it would be my pleasure to show you this extraordinary home.
