Dornoch1John and I had dinner at the Dornoch Tap and Grill in Nottawa the other night. Wednesday’s are schnitzel night where you buy one ($15.95) and get the second for half price so we couldn’t resist. I’m pleased to report, it was good and this little gem is worth a visit.

A group of us ate there a couple of years ago when it was called Dorrington’s and were not impressed so I never went back and let it fall off my radar. In February 2014, the business was taken over by Leslie Price and Steve Holmes who seem to be making a good go of it.

If you like the vibe of a small neighbourhood tap and grill, then check it out. It’s become a favourite of the locals in Nottawa and us Collingwood-ites are figuring out that it is worth the five minute drive. Really, it’s just five minutes from our house right on County Road 124 in Nottawa. The restaurant currently has just 40 seats with another 30 that will eventually open upstairs and there is plenty of parking in the back. They are licensed and open Tuesday to Friday from 11 am to 10 pm, Saturdays 7 am to 10 pm and Sundays 8 am to 10 pm. They serve breakfast on week-ends plus lunch and dinner every day.

dornoch2Inside, the atmosphere is cozy and comfortable with mostly booths that hold 6 people, a few tables and a small lounge area in front of the fireplace. There is also a bar that seats a few more and, they have free Wi-Fi. Our meal, prepared by Chef Malcolm Muth, featured perfectly done pork schnitzel that was fried to a perfect golden brown without being dry, mashed potatoes and fresh grilled veggies. Our wine, which is not available in the LCBO, was from a winery in Niagara and was surprisingly good. They also carry local beers such as Sidelaunch, Creemore Springs and Collingwood Brewery products.

Our server was the owner, Leslie, who was of course, knowledgeable, relaxed and friendly. When I asked her what might be their claim to fame, she mentioned the sticky toffee pudding but alas, our tummies were too full to test it ourselves.

The Dornoch features daily specials including pasta on Tuesdays, Schnitzel on Wednesdays, Wing Night on Thursdays, Friday Fish and chips, Steak on Saturdays and Prime Rib on Sundays. They are closed Mondays. I’m looking forward to checking out week-end breakfasts and other special nights. Rumour has it that the steaks are perfection.
