The tiny house movement has taken a firm hold in recent years as people seek to simplify their lives, reduce costs, reduce their ecological footprint and find new lifestyles that may offer more freedom. Here in the Collingwood area, we are often asked about the possibility of building a tiny home in the area and it has proven to be somewhat complex due to zoning not allowing them as a permitted use.
A tiny house has no firm definition but commonly, they are under 400 square feet in size and sit on wheels making them portable and eliminating the need for building permits. Most municipalities do not having zoning in place to permit them as permanent structures and they are more commonly found as seasonal structures in places such as RV parks.
I recently had a chance to visit with Deanna and Myles who built their own tiny house which is located in a Blue Mountain RV park for the season.
This gorgeous home is thoughtfully designed with every inch taking into account the need for storage and maximizing living space. It is just lovely inside with everything one really needs, from a well-equipped kitchen to a bathroom with a shower, eating and living spaces, a loft bedroom, and decent storage. The owners are loving the lifestyle their tiny home allows. Parked at the side of a riverbank, they can listen to the water and birdsongs all day, have a campfire in the cool evenings and are able to live economically in their own home.
Deanna and Myles have their own Facebook page and will soon be starting their own YouTube Channel called Roaming with the Reids. Follow them on this journey to learn more.
