Smelling Mould; Is It A Gift or a Curse?

I have this unusual problem or gift depending on how you look at it.  I have a very sensitive nose.  Well at least for certain odours and aromas.  It’s a curse to live with but a gift for my real estate Buyers.

Several years ago as we settled into our home, I often smelled a mouldy, musty odour that nobody else could smell.  This surprised me because to my nose, the smell was overwhelming.  I searched and searched and searched to find the source and could only narrow it down to one hallway in our basement.  My eyes would actually water from the stench that apparently, was “in my imagination” according to everyone else.  One day, I couldn’t take it anymore and called my home inspector.  I asked him if he was in the area, would he be so kind as to drop by with his moisture meter one day and help me locate the source?  He came, sniffed and agreed with the others – I was off my rockers as there was no odour.

After snatching the meter out of his hand, I ran in over the floors, up the walls and across baseboards inch by painful inch.  All readings were dry.  We took it into a closet and TING!  We got a reading against a baseboard.  Now this is an interior closet that is not against an outside wall and not close to any plumbing.  It just didn’t make sense.  I begged my hubby to please rip off the baseboard and cut back the drywall behind to see what was going on.  And BINGO!  There was a paper coffee cup sitting inside the wall on a ledge.  I guess one of the contractors who finished our basement left it there.  And you guessed it – there was left over coffee that had gone mouldy.

So while this nose of mine can be hard to live with at times, it’s been a huge benefit as a REALTOR® because I usually know if there is a mould or musty problem in a home the minute I open the door.  I guess I’m kind of like a sniffer dog.  Woof.

It’s always a pleasure to meet new people and to assist them in meeting their real estate goals.  If you would like to schedule a Buyer or Seller consultation with me, please feel free to contact me anytime at 705-446-1762 or send me an email.  I’ll bring my nose along too.
