It’s been awhile since John and I have been in Toronto but we had to head down recently on some personal errands. It hit me that we sure have become spoiled by our life in Collingwood because getting around in the GTA was like a rude awakening from our happy little existence.
Even mid-day, there are SO MANY vehicles – cars, trucks and busses. There are so many traffic lights and time spend waiting is wasted time. Vehicle emissions belched out of some and I swear that at least 20% of drivers got their licences from a cereal box. It takes forever to get from point A to point B. It’s noisy, smelly and nerve wracking. How do people do it every day?
We chatted with a friend who was talking about transit issues. If you don’t leave home on foot to board the TTC, there is nowhere to park your car or, it is very costly. If you are coming from say Mississauga and heading into Toronto, you may need two transit passes. If you drive, parking costs a small fortune if you can find it. With two people, it’s not unusual to see people spending $500 a month or more on just getting to work and back every month. That could carry a $100,000 mortgage!
Life is so much easier here in Collingwood. We rarely see traffic jams unless you count the 8 am line-ups in the Tim Horton’s drive-thru. We can get across town in 3 minutes or over to the next town in 10 minutes. Parking is plentiful and cheap. A local bus pass costs $40.00 a month or, a universal pass with connecting links is $120.00. Round-a-bouts keep traffic moving. The air smells cleaner. Actually, it IS cleaner.
No wonder so many people are moving to the Collingwood area. Transit is one more reason.
