Welcome to Collingwood signSomeone once said to me that everything she knew about the South Georgian Bay area, she knew from my blog.  Actually, I’ve had a number of people say that which gives me a little Dopamine thrill every time.  People also say that they seek to validate their idea of moving to the area through what they read online.  So, I thought it might be interesting to take a stab at describing what life is like when you live here like I do.

The first thing I do when I wake up in the morning is to listen.  If the birds are having frenzied breakfast chatter at the feeder, I know it’s a nice day outside.  Morning coffee might come from locally roasted beans which I enjoy while I do a quick check of my email and Facebook.  I know my online friends will let me know if there is anything really important about the day ahead such as a storm, a closure or the news that it is in fact Sunday and I didn’t need to get up so early.  Breakfast is one of my favourite meals of the day.  (The other two are lunch and dinner.) It’s usually some organic veggies I’ve picked up locally at the Co-op, the Farmers market or local grocer plus a couple of free-range, brown eggs John picked up at the butcher shop.

On a good day, I might work-out with the world’s best personal trainer or, I’ll grab a second cup of coffee, decaf this time, and head into my home office to start the work day.  Or I look out the window at the mountain. Every day is different and may involve showing homes, booking appointments, listing properties, marketing them, attending meetings, jawing with other locals about Town politics and news, talking to lenders, lawyers, builders, planners or any number of different things including an attempt every day to tame the email and social media tigers.  What is different is that Chris and I know the people we talk to. We see them downtown or in the grocery store.  Some are neighbours.  We’re on a first name basis and often end a call with a lunch date booked.  Another difference is that nothing is too far.  I can drive to Meaford in about 35 minutes which is the farthest I may have to go in a day.  I can run out to pick something up anywhere in town and be back in 10 or 15 minutes.Walkway

Some days, I have appointments such as meeting with my Business Exchange Group that has members such as Julie of mycollingwood,  Len from Secure Insurance, Karen from Centum Mortgages,   Barb from the Oxford Learning Centre and many others who have all become fast friends.  I may have an appointment with my Naturopath, Shelby, my Chiropractor, Jen Fawcett   or a day with my STAR group of top REALTORS® from around the province.

In the evenings, I may have a girl’s night out, attend a council meeting, a yoga class, a meeting of the condo board I sit on, visit friends,  attend a local performance or any number of other things that make up life as we know it.  Everything is nearby, there is rarely a wait in line for anything, people are friendly and helpful and in general, the pace is slower.  My husband, who does the grocery shopping AND cooking (yes, he is a keeper and no, he doesn’t have a brother) knows the deli, meat and produce people by name.  Our pharmacist is Mark, we know all the folks at our bank by name, I know the names of my hairdressers kids, I can call up any member of council at home (they may not take my call though) and I know the location of every stop sign in town.

I cannot imagine, for even a single moment, trading our lives for one that might involve subways, traffic jams, security bars and dumpster odours.  No offense to those who love big city life but it’s not the life for me.  This is.  Right here in Collingwood.
