It’s official. Again. Collingwood is one of the most entrepreneurial communities in Canada.
According to a survey compiled by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business for the Financial Post, Collingwood ranked 3rd in Canada and was one of only two communities in Ontario to appear for town or cities with a population of under 149,999.
Collingwood first debuted on the list last year at which time the President of the CFIB stated, “Although one of the smallest communities on the list, he said Collingwood had some of the best presence scores (i.e. number of businesses per capita) in the country and the highest in Ontario.”
Communities are judged on three different criteria: presence, perspective and policy. Presence is a representation of the scale and growth of business ownership, perspective covers indicators associated with optimism and growth plans and policy represents indicators associated with the actions local governments take with respect to business taxation and regulation.
In 2014, Collingwood hired Martin Rydlo as the Director of marketing and business development for the Town . He has clearly been hard at work as he recently launched an economic development action plan, a list of 37 initiatives designed to grow business in the area and which you can read here.
Here are a few good things to know:
We’re growing: with a 20% population growth since 2006, Collingwood’s growth rate is is 2x the provincial average
People come here: Tourism related sectors employ 37%
Top employers: Other top 5 industry sectors include Health Care, Construction, Advanced Manufacturing and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation
