According to a news story just posted online by a local newspaper, Collingwood Ethanol, now known as Amaizeingly Green, issued a formal and public apology at tonight’s Collingwood council meeting.

“Without realizing that the mayor and council were acting in the community’s best interest, we perceived the action taken by the town as an attack on the company. We overreacted and took an offensive position,” said Bruce Chandler of AGP. “We are genuinely sorry for any inappropriate actions we may have taken in the past and look forward to a new relationship with the Town where our commitment will be to address the concerns of the community with respect to our operations, in a proactive and transparent manner.”

While I’m pleased to hear this and to see them acknowledge the error of their ways, I won’t soon forget how incredibly nasty they were when the town and MOE stepped up to protect the interests of community residents.  You may recall how Bruce Chandler’s son and his PGIB group ran a smear campaign against the Mayor at the time.  They bombarded every house in town with two recorded phone messages full of inaccuracies and innuendo.  They refused for the longest time to even admit there was a problem which is now clearly proven and for which they have pled guilty to on all charges in court.

I know, move on Marg and be glad they’ve apologized.  I am, I’ll try but damn, I won’t forget.

What I will most definitely remember is that the citizens most affected pulled together to engage in a public process.  It was most surely only because of their civic action that the plant is now closed for abatement procedures.  Every day citizens CAN and DO make a difference.

I will also remember that our Mayor Chris Carrier, in the face of opposition from certain members of his own council and, under the extreme pressure of the tactics used against him at the outset, stood up for the town and met with success.  It would seem he and the east end group have surely been vindicated in full.
