Anyone who has been around Collingwood over the last few years knows that a big building boom has been underway for several years now. There are numerous new home subdivisions of both single family and condominium homes of all types and prices in just about every part of town. In the end, projects that are “on the books” in various stages of approval will ultimately lead to an increase of a remarkable 70% in the number of households in the town.
This week, the Town released figures for building permits issued last month and, July 2008 broke all previous records by a substantial amount. Normally the summer months generate permits valued at well below $10 million, but not this time.
The building department issued over $40 million in permits last month knocking out the previous record of $22.6 million in August 2006 by a huge distance. Over half of that was issued to the Admiral Collingwood project to be built at Hume and Hurontario Streets on a site that was the focus of considerable controversy over the last several years. Beyond that, more than 200 other permits were also issued.
And so it continues. Despite the endless media reports of an imploding economy, Collingwood seems to continue to show strength and confidence as it’s growth pattern continues.
