The 2016 census data was just released and below is a summary of the findings for the Southern Georgian Bay area including the six key communities of Clearview, Collingwood, Grey Highlands, Meaford, the Blue Mountains and Wasaga Beach.Census Data

The greatest population growth during the last five year period was in Wasaga Beach, followed by Collingwood; the two urban centres in the region.  While the Town of Meaford showed a small decline in population for the period, the region as a whole grew by 7.5% compared to 4-5% average growth in the Province and Country.

Population density is highest in Collingwood which has the smallest land area and of course, density is lowest in Grey Highlands where we find the greatest land mass.  This trend will continue with the Provincial government policies mandating continued intensification in urban areas.

Wasaga Beach has had an interesting evolution and has a population now pretty well equal to Collingwood yet does not have the same, full range of shops and services.  There is opportunity for continued growth in these sectors in the town if they are ones that address the needs of the year round population.

This over-all picture I see here is that the region continues to prosper and grow beyond the norm due to demographics and desire for lifestyle change.  There is plenty of opportunity ahead for further intensification and demand will continue to be in the most urban centres.
