Wow. WOW! What an incredible Canada Day we had here in Collingwood. This really must be the best town on the planet. Here’s how we spent our day off.
First, we started with perfect weather: sunshine, clear skies, very gentle breezes off the Bay, no humidity and plenty of heat
We headed downtown with some family and friends to take in the atmosphere and were quickly wrapped in a sea of red and white. It seemed like everyone was out and about among the strolling buskers that included musicians, a couple of stilt walkers and clowns. Many people were wearing red and white including crazy hats, people draped in flags with even the dogs declaring their patriotism.
While long lines formed in front of the Town Hall for the pancake breakfast, we headed into Duncan’s to chow down and then wandered the sidewalks for a bit before heading to the Federal Building for some special events.
After a few speeches, our Town Crier, Ken Templeman opened the festivities followed by a colour guard and singing of Oh Canada and God Save The Queen by the Sound Investment Choir. Then Major General Richard Rohmer, assisted by our MP, Dr. Kellie Leitch, officiated a citizenship “court” where the crowd were given the opportunity to collectively reaffirm their Canadian citizenship. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a slice of a huge cake which was donated by Loblaw.
Through-out the rest of the afternoon, the Collingwood Idol competition took place with some awesome local talent of all ages taking part.
We headed home to enjoy some patio time in the backyard before enjoying a BBQ with family and friends followed by strawberry shortcake made from fresh strawberries I picked up from Meesters Farms at the farmers market on Saturday morning.
At around 8 p.m., we all headed out to the amphitheatre nestled into the berm just west of The Shipyards and overlooking Georgian Bay. Together with a few thousand other people, we watched one of the best Georgian Bay sunsets I’ve ever seen which left the sky ribboned in pink and blue streaks that reflected in the water. The final Collingwood Idol round took place with six very talented contenders each singing two songs and culminating in a win by a very talented young woman named Becky.
Finally, the event everyone waited for – the fireworks and what a show it was!! I have only missed one such display in the last 25 years and I can tell you this was the best. Stunning. Spectacular. Fitting.
